Department of English Language

The Department of English Language stands as the cornerstone of the College of Languages and Translation at California University of Science and Technology (CalUni). Its mission extends beyond teaching English as a leading global language to preparing linguistic leaders who possess a profound understanding of Western cultural discourse and advanced analytical and writing skills—core competencies for the success of translators, linguists, and scholars in the fields of language, literature, and translation.

Vision:

To be a leading academic reference in English language, literature, and translation studies, and a beacon for producing graduates capable of influencing global cultural discourse through clear, accurate, and effective communication.

Objectives:

Advanced Language Proficiency:

To ensure students achieve an advanced level of mastery in the four core language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—surpassing academic competence toward full professional fluency.

Specialization in Translation into English:

To equip students with theoretical foundations and practical expertise that enable them to address the challenges of reverse translation (from Arabic into English) efficiently, with a strong emphasis on linguistic accuracy and cultural awareness.

Critical Text Analysis:

To develop students’ ability to analyze complex literary, cultural, and technical texts in English and to understand their historical and intellectual contexts, thereby enhancing the deep comprehension required for professional translation.

Application of Computational Linguistics:

To train students in the use of computer-assisted translation tools (CAT Tools) and in handling machine translation outputs with linguistic and technical precision.

Career Prospects:

The department prepares its graduates for a wide spectrum of professional roles that demand high linguistic competence and deep intercultural understanding, including:

Conference Interpreting and Editing: within international organizations, governmental institutions, and NGOs.

Localization Expertise: in technology companies that adapt products and content for Arabic-speaking markets.

Editorial and Linguistic Review: in publishing houses, news agencies, and digital media and marketing firms.

Proofreading and Specialized Translation: in multinational legal and financial offices.
